The Nicholas Brothers “Dancing On Air”. “If this isn’t tap, it sure sounds like an ancestor,” Seibert notes, and this “jigging” became what we now know as tap through minstrel shows. White men imitated the black dancing style, and after the Civil War black minstrels mimicked their imitators, as “people doing imitations of themselves.” Whatever this was, it evolved from rustic stomping into something more elegant, blacks leading the way, whites reaping the glory. By the 1870s, the white minstrel George Primrose was famed for his “soft shoe,” his feet “tickling the floor with tiny motions” while “the arms might float along.” Primrose credited black dancers for his style, and by the turn of the century the infectious syncopated rhythm of ragtime — another black-created hybrid — jumped the rails into tap: Soon even white dancers had a hard time tapping without “swinging.” The closest we can get to what tap looked like at this point is a silent 1897 film clip of a black boy hoofing as white men clap.
